Coating Thickness Testing

Coated metals are employed by many industries and can often serve a wide range of purposes. These coatings might simply be decorative, such as a mirror finish or a gold color, but they can also be used to increase solderability, improve corrosion resistance, increase hardness, or minimize friction and wear.

It’s essential that coating thicknesses are accurate to not only deliver quality products, but also to control costs. Coatings that are too thick, for example, can needlessly increase manufacturing costs. Coating thickness must also be measured for quality control, to ensure customers are receiving the proper materials at the correct thickness.

Verichek is ISO 17025 accredited for coating thickness testing.

Verichek’s Coating Thickness Testing Equipment

Verichek’s focus is to deliver fast, efficient, and reliable coating thickness measurements, which is why the Hitachi X-MET8000 is our equipment of choice. These handheld devices rely on X-ray fluorescence (XRF), which is a proven analytical technique that is widely accepted and preferred for coating thickness measurements.

This handheld XRF is ideal because it delivers test results in just a few seconds and can be calibrated in as little as 30 seconds. Additionally, the X-MET8000 does not damage the material being tested.

Testing Location Options

As is the case with all of our metal analysis testing services, coating thickness testing is customized to meet your individual needs. Depending on the size, weight, and number of pieces you need measured, you can choose to send the products to our in-house metal testing lab or have us perform testing on-site.

In-House Coating Thickness Testing

Our in-house coating thickness testing service is ideal for customers that only need a few sample pieces measured. We regularly test the coating thickness of samples of up to 100 pieces, depending on the size and weight of the sample. Verichek promises accurate results and a quick turnaround time that is sure to meet your requirements.

On-Site Coating Thickness Testing

If you require samples of larger than 100 pieces to be measured for coating thickness, on-site testing is available. This service is also available for pieces that are cost-prohibitive to ship or parts that have already been installed.
